Senior Media and Communications Advisor

Closing Date

Monday 18 August 2025 - 06:00 pm

The Victorian Greens are seeking an experienced and motivated political communications and media adviser to be a part of a small but dynamic office helping to drive the work of the Victorian Greens until the end of 2026.

The Victorian Greens have seven MPs in the Victorian Parliament and are in shared balance of power in the upper house, offering opportunities to drive the political agenda and secure outcomes for Victorians.

This senior position works directly with the Leader of the Victorian Greens, MPs, Director of Communications, Director of Media and the Chief of Staff as well as other parts of the Victorian Greens organisation.

You’ll be part of a small, nimble and high-achieving team driven to get outcomes on the issues we all care about – like climate change, housing and social justice.

This role is two-fold:

  1. Helping the Director of Media with traditional media pitching, monitoring and management (including undertaking duties of the Director of Media when they are away)
  2. Supporting our Director of Communications with communications tasks such as team coordination and project management, digital content creation, and other duties. If you also have video or design skills to help with our communications, that’s even better!

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Media:

  • Write and distribute content for publication including media releases, key messages, and copy for digital and social media channels.
  • Support the Director of Media with announcements including coordinating press conferences, briefing MPs and managing media.
  • Provide media advice to the Leader and MPs, helping identify and execute daily media tactics and opportunities.
  • Be a first point of contact for incoming media requests and support the Director of Media with suggested responses.
  • Develop and manage good working relationships with journalists, producers and editors.
  • Monitor the media and breaking news ensuring MPs and staff are kept informed.
  • Be available to work altered hours outside of regular work hours as part of a roster for media monitoring with the Director of Media (including some early starts for media monitoring).
  • Support the Director of Media with risk mitigation and crisis communications.

Communications:

  • Provide support to the Director of Communications in coordinating the communications staff team and helping to set our strategic priorities.
  • Provide support with copywriting and digital content creation, across social media, supporter emails and advertising.
  • An interest in learning best practice advertising principles and mastering tools such as Meta, Google and YouTube Ads, and Google Analytics.
  • Experience in the use of Adobe Creative Suite, Canva and Capcut is desirable, but not essential.

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Experience in achieving successful media and/or communications outcomes in a political setting, with a demonstrated high level of political nous and strategic thinking. Political experience is desirable but not strictly necessary.
  • Experience working with traditional/legacy media in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience in project management and coordinating communications across multiple teams, with excellent copywriting and content creation skills. Experience with digital advertising is not essential, but will be highly regarded.
  • Experience with managing people and building collaborative teams – including coordinating groups of people towards a shared goal and building a positive team culture.
  • Highly developed written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to ‘manage up’ and the ability to say no.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and work to tight deadlines in a fast-paced and complex environment – and the self-awareness and ability to manage your own time and energy effectively.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Australian Greens' values, and commitment to the Australian Greens' Principles and Charter.
